Teaching about alcohol

Suggested teaching
programmes for 11-16s

We recommend that an effective alcohol awareness course requires a minimum of 10 hours teaching time and needs to cover 4 key areas:

  • Factual information
  • Resistance skills
  • Behaviour with peers
  • Social norms

For more details about these areas see What do they need to know?

We have 4 suggested teaching programmes:

The recommended course for each age range includes:

  • 4 Science lessons
  • 4 PSHE lessons
  • 2 web sessions

The short course for each age range covers the 4 key areas in less detail and includes:

  • 1 Science lesson
  • 3 PSHE lessons
  • 1 web session

In addition to following one of the teaching programmes, two class sessions on the Talk About Alcohol website is recommended, one at the beginning of the programme, and one at the end. Students should also be encouraged to use the site at home if possible. They should be directed especially to the FIVE Zone - this covers the most crucial information concisely, and covers all 4 key areas.

Teachers may need to adapt the programmes or materials to suit the age and maturity of their students.

Teachers may wish to visit the Alcohol Fact File to brush up their knowledge before delivering the lessons.
