Teaching about alcohol

What do young people know and think about alcohol?

All your students will have some knowledge or experience of drinking alcohol already.

A survey of 11-16 year olds was conducted as part of the pilot research for this website*. Almost two thirds (65%) of respondents said they had ‘ever’ had an alcoholic drink. This ties in with National findings, showing that 54% of 11- 15 year olds have had a whole alcoholic drink.

Even those who report never having tried alcohol themselves will all have seen familiy members, friends, members of the public or people on TV and in films drinking it.

This section shows you what many young people think, know and have concerns about. Understanding this may help you focus your teaching to reinforce the important messages and correct misconceptions.
